On this month of July, we share with you an interesting article published by one of our Greek members, Trekking Hellas about the necessary adaptation of outdoor activities to the rise in temperatures in the Mediterranean area.
Greece offers countless opportunities for outdoor activities under the bright summer sun. However, recent heatwaves have reminded us of the importance of caution and preparation when enjoying nature. To ensure your safety and prevent any heat-related issues, we’ve prepared some tips for you, whether you choose a guided activity or a self-guided adventure.
Guided Experiences: On our guided activities, our experienced guides adjust itineraries based on the conditions, ensuring your safety and enjoyment of the experience.
Self-Guided Adventures: If you prefer exploring at your own pace, our self-guided programs provide you with everything you need, including detailed maps, suggested itineraries, and safety tips.
Whichever you choose, follow these tips to stay safe during a heatwave:
- Know Your Limits and Choose Wisely:
- Guided: If you’re a beginner, unfamiliar with the area, or prefer having an experienced guide, guided activities are ideal.
- Self-Guided: If you’re experienced and have thoroughly researched the route and weather conditions, self-guided programs are a great option.
- Hydration:
- Always carry plenty of water (at least 2-3 liters) and replenish electrolytes with fruits, salted nuts, or specialized drinks.
- Use a wet hat, buff, or simply splash water on your face and neck to stay cool.
- Strategic Timing:
- Start early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the hottest hours.
- Choose shorter routes or shaded trails if you’re on your own.
- Guided activities are scheduled to minimize exposure to extreme temperatures.
- Dress Smart:
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, and breathable clothing.
- Protect yourself from the sun with a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen.
- Refer to our programs’ “Gear” section for more information.
- Listen to Your Body:
- Don’t ignore signs like headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, or loss of consciousness. Rest in the shade and seek help if needed.
- Stay Informed and Plan Ahead:
- Check the weather forecast before you go and adjust your plans accordingly.
- Identify nearby places (shops, cafes, tavernas) where you can find shade, water, or help if needed.Bonus Tip for Self-Guided Adventures:
- Inform someone about your itinerary and expected return time.
- Carry a map or GPS and a complete first-aid kit.
At Trekking Hellas, your safety and enjoyment of outdoor adventures are our top priorities.
We’re here to help you choose the right activity and guide you on an unforgettable journey through Greece’s natural beauty!
